Heart and rain

Houstonians' hearts are with those impacted by Hurricane Ian.

“Frankly, this is the kind of storm I worry most about when I think of Houston and its vulnerabilities to tropical weather. We need to be ready to help Floridians in the days and weeks ahead,” wrote Eric Berger of Space City Weather

Ian made landfall in southwestern Florida as a category-5 and is expected to make a second landfall into South Carolina on Friday. The storm has had catastrophic effects.

We all hope friends and family in Ian’s path stay safe. In the meantime, here are some ways to help those impacted by Ian:

American Red Cross
The American Red Cross is providing shelter and relief supplies for evacuees in Florida. Help people affected by Hurricane Ian by donating online, calling 1-800-RED CROSS, or texting the word IAN to 90999 to make a $10 donation. The Red Cross sent blood to Florida in advance of Hurricane Ian. Blood donations are needed to prevent potential disruptions to patient care. Volunteer with the Red Cross. See the most urgently needed volunteer positions here

CrowdSource Rescue
Texas disaster response nonprofit CrowdSource Rescue is activating to help those in need and are accepting requests for assistance and volunteers who can help. If you’re able to help, click here and choose I Can Help. If you’d like to donate, click here.

Feeding America
Working in conjunction with local Florida food banks - Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, Feeding South Florida, and Feeding Northeast Florida, Feeding America is sending truckloads of food to the Tampa and Fort Myers areas. Disaster boxes are packed with essentials. Donate here.

Jewish Federations of North America 2022 Hurricane Relief Fund
The Jewish Federations of North America provides relief and recovery efforts during this time of crisis and in the aftermath. Donate here.

Salvation Army

The Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services is working to help those impacted by Hurricane Ian.

Salvation Army
The Salvation Army is preparing resources to help survivors and first responders. A Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services team from Texas, including an Incident Management Team and six mobile feeding units, headed to Florida on Wednesday morning. Find more information on The Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services here. Support hurricane relief efforts by donating online or donating by phone: 1-800-SAL-ARMY. One hundred percent of designated disaster donations go to direct services for survivors and first responders.

Project Hope
Project HOPE is responding to Hurricane Ian and has an Emergency Response Team on the ground in Orlando and Jacksonville, ready to help. Donate here.

Texas Relief Warriors
Volunteers from Texas Relief Warriors will head to Florida once it’s safe to do so. In the meantime, they are collecting supplies, including shelf stable food, can openers, hygiene items, baby formula, diapers, baby food, cleaning supplies, and more. See Texas Relief Warriors's Facebook page for updates. Donate funds here.

Editor’s note: We will continue to update this list as we hear of more ways to help those impacted by Ian. If you know of ways to help, please comment below or email [email protected].
