Buzz Kidz by Orly Golub, age 12

November 2011
Orly Golub, a seventh grader at The Emery/Weiner School, hopes that her volunteer project to raise money for the Berry children will become an annual event.

Bat Mitzvah Project for the Berrys

On July 3, there was a car accident that was fatal for parents Joshua and Robin Berry and left their three children injured. Willa, 6, had broken bones and Peter, 9, and Aaron, 8, spinal cord injuries. When I learned of the accident, I was sad and scared for them. I realized that we take …

Pin Oak Estates

My name is Otis, and I am new to the neighborhood. My best bud, Ellie, a 2-year old dachshund, and I are adjusting to our new home. Stairs were new to us, but I think we’ve got them down. I love going up two steps at a time, but the coming down …

Collecting the Unexpected

November 2011
John Delayre has spent 10 years building a 1,100-pipe organ in his house.

The doorbell that rings behind John Delayre’s steel-plated front doors chimes the first eight notes of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony in homage to Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. But the doorbell isn’t the only surprise in this modern house.

In an alcove above Delayre’s living room, just beneath the 26-foot ceiling, ascending and descending like notes in concerto, are more …

Tips for Travel to Alaska

November 2011
Brendan, Allegra and Allan Fradkin, from left, sport their Buzz T-shirts in front of Mt. McKinley.

It’s been called America’s last great frontier. The astounding landscapes, untamed wilderness, abundant wildlife and mountain-man mentality live on in Alaska.

Most Alaska travelers these days experience the state from the safety of a cruise ship. Our travelers chose a more independent route.

For ophthalmologist Allan Fradkin and his son and daughter, Brendan and Allegra, Alaska was a last-minute …

There are a few things that make every family’s Thanksgiving their own. The people around the table. Small traditions like using the children’s turkey-shaped place cards every year, or sharing what each person is most thankful for. Invariably, every family has a special recipe – or two or three – that says Thanksgiving. Something that, no matter where they spend …

Top Songs for Playing on Thanksgiving

November 2011
(Photo: ##http://www.hartphoto.com##www.hartphoto.com##)

There’s not a lot I love more than pre-Thanksgiving chaos. The house smells great, family’s in town, kids and dogs are running in and out. Surely there are more civilized family gatherings, but I’ll take the mess.

Even so, there’s got to be a little stress relief. And what better way is there to set a mood than with music? …

Tracing Your Family Tree

November 2011
Laura Stover makes a gravestone rubbing at her great, great grandfather's gravesite in Salado, Texas.

When my son was in kindergarten he came home from school asking about our heritage. He had been given the task of re-creating the flag from his country of origin. “That’s easy,” I told him. “Your father’s family is Swedish, and mine is Dutch.” We googled “Swedish flag,” and he got out his crayons and completed the assignment. No one …

Preserving Your Family History

Online resources make it easier to collect and save family papers, photos and oral histories. (Photo: ##http://istockphoto.com/mashabubamashabuba##istockphoto.com/mashabubamashabuba##)

It’s not how you tell the story, but that you tell it in the first place. Many people have boxes of family photos, letters and documents in their attic or garage. One day, they promise themselves, they will put these precious mementos into a self-published book or on a DVD and archive them for their children and grandchildren.

Unfortunately, life …
